White Island Day Trip

White Island has been named so by Captain James Cook, who passed through the Bay of Plenty in 1769. The Maori Name for White Island is Whakaari, which means 'to make visible'. This andesite volcanoe (like 70% of all volcanoes of the Pacific Rim) is continously active, producing steam which emerges over the island as a white cloud. Walking on White Island is like a stroll on a lunar landscape or like the surface of Mars. This island is one of the most accessible active volcanoes of the world.

For those who arrive by cruise ship we pick you up at the Mt. Maunganui Harbour at 9.00 am and bring you to Whakatane Airport. There you will board the helicopter and fly out to White Island, land there and have a one hour guided tour up to the main crater if volcanic conditions alow. On return form the volcano we take you to Whakatane township for lunch, have a look, a walk or a swim at Ohope beach and take you back to Mt. Maunganui Harbour latest at 4.00 pm.
